Bart leads our work on developing education and youth policy. His research focus has been on disadvantage as well as special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). He is the lead author of our reports ‘SEND and poverty’ and ‘Disadvantaged pupils’ progress in secondary school’.
More recently his work has covered youth mentoring, social action and widening participation. Bart has worked in education for over a decade and he combines experience of policy making at the heart of central government with hands-on experience as a teacher and middle leader in secondary schools. Bart was a fast-streamer at the Department for Education between 2006 and 2010, including a year on secondment at the Cabinet Office. After a PGCE in 2011, he then worked as a geography teacher, data analyst and Head of Department at a large mixed comprehensive secondary school in Derbyshire.
