#013 – The Life Pedagogic: Matt Jones
7th February 2024
The Youth and Education Podcast is thrilled to welcome Matt Jones OBE to take us through his Life Pedagogic.
Matt is an inspirational headteacher at the high achieving Ark Globe Academy in Southwark. But in a previous life, he was a professional footballer and later manager. Drawn off the pitch by the opportunity to teach, Matt now also oversees ‘The Elephant Group’, a charity that push for fairer access to top universities for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Recorded during the 2023 GCSE exam period, Baz and Matt engage in a wide ranging conversation, discussing:
- How Matt managed to pursue professional football without abandoning his studies – and how he is helping the next generation of prospective footballers do the same thing
- How the FA is changing the way it supports young footballers to make sure they have qualifications and pathways for when they leave football
- The extent to which schools can help young people with social mobility and close the achievement gap
- How having a disabled child has shaped his views on children, parenting and education
