Interested in the emphasis on literacy in Blackpool. In the early 90s, I alerted the Labour front bench to the links between early reading failure, illiteracy and crime. The eventual response was the literacy strategy, which, unfortunately, did not achieve its goals of improving literacy because of a formulaic approach and a lack of understanding of the thinking involved in learning to read. I now work pro bono, and am happy to help with literacy in any way possible. The root difficulty in English, across the world, is integrating knowledge of regular patterns (phonics) and areas where the written and spoken language have diverged, so that the phonics no longer work. I’ve set out the approach in my books, and am happy to discuss.
